Antiques

dated 1864 on the lock, U.S / Springfield and Eagle stamped into the lock, one piece walnut stock has visible inspector’s cartouches, 40 inch barrel, appears to be Model of 1866 “Second All-in Conversion Trapdoor Springfield, muzzleloader converted to breechloader, addopted as the “Model of 1866", rifle was modified from its original muzzleloading configuration by milling out the rear portion of the barrel and fastening a hinged trapdoor-type breechblock, rifled to .50 cal. for use with the new, centerfire, .50-70 Gov’t cartridge, breech block is dated “1866” (above an eagle head marking), original Civil War vintage lockplates were retained, example “1864”, approximately half of the M1866s were issued to units of the U.S. military, and many were utilized in the American West, possible that this rifle could have been used in the Civil War as a muzzleloader and later converted to a breechloader in 1866, been in my family for the past 100+ years, good, antique, unrestored condition.
